Something I read a few days ago on the website of a band I used to listen to regularly provoked me into writing this. The band announced the cancellation of a tour due to their drummer requiring medical treatment. It was emphasised that the good health and future well-being of band members has to be priority.
This got me thinking about Kate and how things went for us. Since Kate didn't want to go down the route of seeking conventional medical treatment - which I fully supported and respected - we would have loved the luxury of being able to stop and rest and for her to attempt recovery. In our case, we had nowhere to go. After travelling around Europe for several years we returned to Edinburgh in the autumn of 2013, to gather together a studio set-up so we could carry on but remain based in one place.
Edinburgh was considered but was too expensive, Berlin is where we'd most wanted to go, but Budapest was where we ended up. We had no real support network around us in the way we wished for. It was clear by that point we didn't fit in with my family situation in Edinburgh and we wouldn't have fitted in with Kate's family in Australia. We needed people to come to our thing, to see things the way we did, on our wavelength, that's partly why we set off for Europe in the first place.
We were moving away from the system because we recognised early on how dysfunctional, unfair and flawed it is, sometimes downright evil, something which I'm sure far more people can see now with their own eyes in 2022. We were ahead of our time, we saw it coming and the whole SoulJahm ethos was to leave behind this dying system and set off to build a new world for ourselves on our terms with values that were true to us, not simply passed on because "thats what everyone does". Unfortunately, no-one else backed us up. We were supported on and off from a distance, which we very much appreciated, but it wasn't enough. We were crying out for others to fully commit and join us (see Where Are The People!).
The main thing I still feel angry about from time to time is the way the system railroads everyone down certain paths by making life very difficult if you try to forge your own path. The pressure on us and the sense of aloneness towards the end was caused by this bullying system, which threatens or attempts to punish you in various ways when you don't go along with its agendas. Again, that should be pretty obvious to anyone now in 2022 after all the restrictions and rules of the last few years.
I felt to write this after reading about this band's medical situation, because its all very well for those kinds of people who follow these artificial authorities, they are well supported and can pat each other on the back and virtue signal, but I wanted to put out this voice and perspective because it should be heard. If we are living in a so-called free world, which many like to believe, then this viewpoint should be expressed and heard.
